What fails, and what it tells you

The material tells you a lot about what is happening and what to expect next. Houses around here contain a real mixture, often several types in the same building from decades of partial work.

Why pinholes come in groups

This is the single most useful thing we can tell you about copper pipe, and it is the reason we ask about history before quoting.

Pinhole corrosion is caused by conditions inside the pipe — water chemistry, flow velocity, temperature, and how the system was installed. Those conditions apply along the whole run, not to one inch of it. So when a pipe develops a pinhole, the rest of that run has been living through exactly the same conditions for exactly as long.

In practice that means a first pinhole is often followed by a second somewhere else on the same line, then a third. Each one individually looks like a small repair. Collectively they add up to more than replacing the run would have cost, plus several separate episodes of water damage.

Can you repair a pipe inside a finished wall?

Yes, though it needs access. We locate it precisely first so the opening is one deliberate spot. Sometimes rerouting a short section through an accessible path causes less disruption than reaching the original.

Is a push-fit repair coupling acceptable?

They have their place, particularly for a fast repair in a wet or awkward spot. For permanent work in a concealed location we generally prefer a soldered or pressed joint, and we will tell you which we are using and why.

My water has gone rusty. Is that the pipes?

Often, particularly with galvanised supply lines or an ageing water heater. If it is only hot water, suspect the heater. If it is both, suspect the piping.

Water hammer — the moving column of water stopping abruptly. It is usually fixable with arrestors or by properly securing loose pipe, and it is worth doing, since repeated shock stresses joints over time.

How urgent is a small drip?

More urgent than it looks if it is inside a wall or above a ceiling, because the damage accumulates invisibly. A visible drip into a basement with an open floor is less pressing, though it still means something is failing.
